With high temperatures in the forecast here are some things to watch out for during extreme heat and a few tips that may make it more bearable.

Centers for Disease Control has a Extreme Heat Prevention Guide, Tips for Preventing Heat Related Illness  and information about Heat Stress in the Older Adults.

Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off. Air conditioning is the strongest protective factor against heat-related illness. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a day will reduce the risk for heat-related illness. Stay hydrated with water, avoid sugary drinks.  Wear lightweight, light colored, loose-fitting clothing.  Consider visiting a shopping mall, public library, senior citizen center or go to the movies for a few hours.
